This week I attended a presentation by Cambridge’s Community Development Department on the future of the city’s riverfront. It was great to hear that the city is thinking about ways to increase our enjoyment of the Charles, including — as crazy as this sounds — making it swimmable!
The Charles River Conservancy has actually put together a very interesting report, looking at bringing public swimming to the Charles. While taking a dip in an urban river is not something we do here in the US, there are many places in Europe where this is common practice. The report presents an interesting look at this phenomena in Switzerland, and when you read it and see the pictures, like the one below of the Rhine in Basel, it doesn’t seem all that crazy after all.
