I do my best to support local businesses — here are my faves from Porter Square, near my office. If you’re in the neighborhood, you should definitely check them out:
Abodeon– a home goods store/gallery that combines vintage modern with contemporary artisan design. It’s like stepping into the pages of Dwell magazine!
Greenward– gifts, housewares and other functional items – all green, all good. Although at the time of this writing, website seems to be having issues – maybe it’ll work by the time you read this…
Metamorphosis– I LOVE this place – owner Eddie buys cool quasi-antique furniture at auction and gives it new life w/ a little paint, reupholstery, etc. And if you find a piece you like – he’ll do it up to your specs – it’s economical, environmental, and you end up w/ something different than the standard Crate-and-Barrel fare.
Nomad– jewelry, clothes, rugs and decor from around the world. Plus a super cute little dog (“Watson”) supervising the shop’s activities – be sure to shut the door behind you!
Simon’s Coffee Shop– great coffee without any too-cool-for-school attitude from the baristas. Great sandwiches too!
Ward Maps– antique reproduction maps plus maps and urban images printed onto things like coasters, mouse pads, notebooks…
